This Easter Egg Cake was so much fun to decorate!

As I was quickly running through the grocery store grabbing a couple of items, I spotted 2 vanilla cakes that I knew would be perfect for this edible DIY.

And while you can totally bake up your own homemade cake, this is a time saver hack (or “tip” for people who prefer that word) as you don’t have to bake it or wait for it to fully cool before assembling.

This trick can save you anywhere from 1 to 3 hours!

Either way, adding these colorful chocolate eggs to the cake’s frosting is a lot of fun.

And as you can imagine, there was also much delight when cutting into it.

We took it to Roger’s parent’s house for a family gathering and by the end of the night there was nothing left but the cake stand!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. First, scrape off the sprinkles and frosting dollops.
  2. Spread a small dollop of frosting on the center of your cake stand (or platter).
  3. Place the first layer of cake on top of the frosting (this will help keep it in place and prevent it from sliding) and then place the second cake on top of the first one. *(1)
  4. Next, add a thin layer of icing on the cake for your crumb layer.
  5. Let chill in your fridge for 15 minutes to 2 hours, until the icing has set. You know it has set when you touch the cake and it has hardened and the icing doesn’t stick to your fingers.
  6. Add a second thicker layer of frosting and smooth with a frosting spatula or knife. I ran it under hot water (and shook off the water) to help make this layer more smooth.
  7. Place a layer of milk chocolate eggs around the base of the cake (pressing the chocolate egg into the frosting of the cake) and keep adding layers of chocolate eggs up the side of the cake.
  8. Add a little pile of chocolate eggs on top.
  9. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. Be sure to remove any cardboard or tray from the base of each cake when assembling the cakes.
