We love sitting out by the pool in the hot summer months, but the heat can get a bit intense down here in the south.
So we decided to make this DIY Umbrella Side Table.
It comes in so handy on hot sunny days, plus it looks great too!
And I’m obsessed with this 9-foot patio umbrella!
It’s the perfect size and perfect color.
What’s your favorite way to stay cool during the summer?

Materials:
1-2 bags Quick-Dry Quikcrete Concrete Mix
2-inch PVC pipe (size may need to be bigger or smaller depending on the side of your umbrella pole, so measure it first)
Dark Stain
Brush or Sponge
Polyurethane Clear Coat
Electric Drill, with a Large Hole Saw to cut the center hole

Instructions:
1. First make sure the pole of the umbrella fits inside the PVC pipe, as it will have to slide down into the PVC pipe once it is imbedded in your table base.
2. Next, you want to set your plastic planter upright and hold the wood board on top of it, to measure and mark your PVC pipe to cut it to size.
3. Cut the PVC pipe with a handsaw slightly shorter (~1/4-1/2 inch) than the height that you marked, so that it will be hidden by the wood board when it sits on top.
4. After the PVC pipe is cut to the correct length, place a few pieces of duct tape over the end that will sit down inside the concrete at the base of the planter. This is to prevent the pipe from filling with the quikcrete. We used pink duck tape, but any color will suffice! 😉
Now this is where we learned some trial and error when we made this DIY for ourselves. During the first attempt, we tried to mix the concrete inside a small black plastic tub (that I got from Trader Joe’s). However, we realized that was a mistake, as it was not heavy enough to withstand the wind. So instead…
5. Mix the quikcrete concrete (according to the packaging instructions) in the planter. Mix the quikcrete, according to the packaging instructions, and fill the planter with the concrete about half full or more depending on how much weight you want it to have and how strong you are.
7. Then place the PVC Pipe (duct tape down) inside the planter filled with quikcrete.
8. Make sure the PVC pipe is leveled and centered inside the planter before it starts to set and harden. Also, be sure to put something heavy on top of the PVC pipe to hold it firmly in place while the concrete sets.
9. Let set and harden according to the packaging instructions.
While the concrete is drying you can work on the tabletop.
10. Take the unfinished wood board, and mark the exact middle using a tape measure.
11. Then use an electric drill and a large hole saw (the size of your PVC pipe) to cut a large hole for in the center of the wood disk.
12. After this is finished you can use sandpaper to smooth up the cut hole sides.
13. Then use dark wood stain to stain the tabletop wood disk on both sides, then let dry according to the packaging instructions.
14. Once dry, add a clearcoat sealer like polyurethane on the wood and let dry according to the packaging instructions.
15. Once the planter and wood board are dry, you can set the wood board on top of the planter and place the umbrella pole through the wood and into the PVC pipe.
Note: If your PVC pipe is a little too high and sticks out past the top of the wooden disk, you can remove the disk and use a hand saw or a hacksaw to cut the PVC down just a bit.
We hope you enjoy your new DIY Umbrella Side Table!
