These DIY White Salt Dough Ornaments are a bright white twist on traditional salt dough and are a fun way to create ornaments for your Christmas tree and presents.

Creating salt dough ornaments is one of my favorite Christmas traditions.
In 2014, I shared my first tutorial for white salt dough and you all loved it!!
While regular salt dough is pretty, I really wanted the bright white look of cornstarch ornaments without their fragility.
So this has been my go-to way of creating white salt dough for nearly a decade.
And these cookie cutters have to be my new favorite way of turning white salt dough into beautiful ornaments for our Christmas tree, garlands, and gifts.

Instructions:
1. First, in a medium bowl, mix 1 & 1/2 cups of flour and 3/4 cup of salt and set it to the side.
2. In a smaller bowl mix 3/4 cup of white acrylic paint and 1/2 cup of water until completely combined.
3. Then pour roughly 3/4ths of the white paint water into the salt flour mixture, mix together with a spoon, and add more white paint water as needed until a dough ball forms. *
4. Knead for 15-30 seconds to create a workable dough.
5. Roll the dough out with a ceramic or stone rolling pin to the thickness you desire.
Thicker takes longer to dry and thinner takes less time, but they can also be slightly more fragile. Ours are about 1/4-1/3 of an inch.
6. Use cookie cutters to cut out the dough and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
You can roll out the scraps and make more.
7. Use a toothpick to create a hole at the top of your ornaments. The holes will shrink as they dry so be sure not to make the holes too small.
8. Preheat your oven to 200ºF and bake the salt dough ornaments for 2-3 hours or until they are hardened.*
9. Once the salt dough is dry, cut a piece of velvet ribbon and use a toothpick to thread the ribbon through the hole in the salt dough. Tie a knot and use your new salt dough ornament on your tree, a garland, or to decorate your gifts.
***Notes:
Note on Paint
Every paint is different, some are thicker and others are more watery.
If the dough is too dry you can add more of the white paint water and if it’s too wet you can add more flour.
Note on Drying
There are two ways to dry your salt dough.
The first is on a piece of parchment paper covered baking sheet in the oven at 200ºF for 2-3 hours or until they are hardened. Be sure to keep an eye on them if you put them in the oven.
Altneratively you can let them air dry on a piece of parchment paper for 48-72 hours. About every 12 hours I flip the salt dough over so that the “wet” side of the dough will be exposed for (relatively) quicker drying.
Either way, the thicker the salt dough, the more time they will need to dry.
