7 Christmas Reminders of Christ that are symbolized in some of our favorite Christmas traditions.

The Christmas season is so special as it is a wonderful time to reflect on the blessings of God and find additional ways to share these blessings with those in our community and around the world.
Over the years, I have shared a variety of blog posts on topics like Christmas and Christianity (a little look at history and the Bible during the holiday season) and 35 Ways to Emphasize Christ in Christmas.
I loved seeing @leah_langston‘s post on Christmas reminders and wanted to share some of our family’s favorite Christian symbols at Christmas time and how they reflect the true meaning of Christmas.
This time of year can be filled with busy chaos, materialism, pain, and fear, but if we stop to remember the true meaning of Christmas, there is so much peace & calm, love & hope, and joy to be found in the Christ of Christmas.
As we gather around our tree this year and watch our son open his 4 special presents (we cherish The Four Gifts for Christmas Tradition), we will share with him these special 7 Christmas Reminders of Christ.
1. The Tree
There are so many myths and stories (one including the leader of the Reformation, Martin Luther) on how evergreen trees came to be so special at Christmas time.
And while I’m not here to argue the legitimacy or falsehoods of any of them, I will note that the beginnings of something shouldn’t be our justification, rather we should look at the big picture.
As we celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas the evergreen tree (whether real or artificial, flocked or colorful), is a reminder of why Jesus came to this earth (Isaiah 53:5).
By having a tree in our home, we are able to see the full picture of his life, from His birth in a manger to His death on a wooden cross/tree.
2. The Lights
When all hope was thought to be lost at Calvary 2000+ years ago, we now know it to be the beginning of a hope that burns brightly within us that can never be extinguished.
Jesus is the light of the world! (John 8:12)
As we hang the lights on our tree and watch as their glow reflects off the ornaments, we are reminded that each of us is to be a reflection of Him.
We are to share the light we have with those around us through our actions (patience, love, and kindness) and our words (both online and in-person).
The light we have is a gift meant to be shared with the world (Matthew 5:16).

3. The Gifts
The number of presents under a tree may hold material worth, but nothing compares to the gift God gave us in the form of His only Son over 2000 years ago (John 3:16).
This is a gift not meant to be hidden or hoarded but to be shared with others.
It is a perpetual gift that keeps giving.
One of the reasons we love the 4 gifts at Christmas tradition is not only because it simplifies family gift-giving, but it also leaves more room for families to emphasize the true meaning of Christmas.
The most precious gift of all.
The gift of love and humility in the form of a Baby. Christ is the true meaning of Christmas.
4. The Star
Atop our tree, we have a large star.
This is a beautiful reminder of how the shepherds (Luke 2:8-20) and the wise men (Matthew 2:1-12) followed the star to find Jesus.
Whether you have humble beginnings like the shepherds or all the riches of the world like the wise men, Jesus came to save you.
Even if it took you years of searching like the wise men, or only a night like the shepherds, Jesus is there waiting for you with open arms of love. (Matthew 7:7-8)

5. Candy Canes
The candy cane has many stories and symbols that reflect Christ.
One poem says it so simply:
Look at the Candy Cane, what do you see?
Stripes that are red like the blood shed for me (Revelation 1:5)
White is for my Savior Who’s sinless and pure! (I John 1:7)
“J” is for Jesus My Lord, that’s for sure!
Turn it around and a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd was born for Me! (Psalm 23:1 & Isaiah 40:11)
6. Holly
In the dead of winter, we can see so much beauty in the bright and colorful holly.
Just as the evergreen tree reminds us of the cross, so does the pointed sharp holly prompt us to remember the crown of thorns placed on the head of Jesus.
It’s a beautiful juxtaposition.
The beauty of holly and the beauty of Christ. The pain of the prickly holly and the pain Christ suffered to save us.

7. Red & Green
While in years past I have enjoyed having a neutral and even pink Christmas color scheme.
Ever since our son was born I have been slowly moving away from it and towards a more traditional color scheme including various shades of red and green.
In Christianity, the red is seen to symbolize the blood of Christ (Colossians 1:20, Ephesians 1:7, & Hebrews 9:14), while the green is a symbol of everlasting life, like the evergreen tree (John 5:24 & John 17:3).
So whether you are having a quiet Christmas at home or are spending it with friends and family, I hope these 7 Christmas Reminders of Christ bring you peace and hope, as well as meaning and purpose to your Christmas season, as we all draw closer to the true meaning of Christmas.

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
Luke 1:76-78 NIV
