When I ordered this cake online through grocery pick up I had a totally different project in mind (one that I eventually made that you all loved so much it went viral).
But when I got home I discovered that the side of the cake had touched the edge of the lid and a good portion of the icing was no longer on the cake (this totally could have been my fault when unloading the groceries).
I was disappointed, but a crafter, baker, and DIYer never gives up when things don’t go according to plan.
So I started brainstorming how to repurpose this cake for a different project.
After going round and round in my head that night while trying to fall asleep I finally decided to make Conversation Heart Cake Pops.
Now this was a bit out there because it was August, the original cake was for a Christmas cake, and making a Valentine’s tutorial in the fall definitely caught my family off guard.
Being pregnant makes you do some crazy things, like trying to film way ahead of schedule (I wanted to get ahead in case the baby came early while also trying to avoid comments about my weight come February – my due date) or planning/filming Valentine’s content when most people were still clinging to the last of summer (and upset with me for posting fall content).
But that’s ok because I’m a planner and I love dreaming (quite literally) up fun ideas to share with you all!
And these Conversation Heart Cake Pops were so much fun to make, eat, and share!

Conversation Heart Cake Pops
These Conversation Heart Cake Pops are a fun way to repurpose a cake into colorful heart-shaped cake pops with a sweet message on top for Valentine’s Day or a Galentine’s party.
Ingredients
Instructions
- First, blend up a cake until the frosting and cake are thoroughly combined to create a dough-like consistency.
- Next, spread out the cake dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, about 1 inch thick.Β
- Freeze until thoroughly chilled, about 1-2 hours.
- While the hearts are chilling, pour out your letter sprinkles and create conversation heart phrases with the letters to go on the heart cake pops. I created 15-20 as I wasn’t sure how many I would need until I cut out the hearts.
- Once the dough has chilled, use a heart cookie cutter to cut out the cake dough into heart shapes. Cut as close together as possible in order to create more heart cake pops. *(3-4)
- Next, melt a small amount of the white candy melts according to their packaging instructions,
- Dip the top of a cake pop stick in the melted candy melts and then push it into the base of a heart cake pop, wiping away any excess candy melts. Repeat this on all of the heart cakes.
- The candy melt on the stick acts like edible glue to help hold the cake ball to the lollipop stick.
- Next, melt the pink candy melts according to their packaging instructions stirring in coconut oil as needed. *(2)
- Then use a spoon to spread the melted candy melts all over one of the heart cake pops, shaking off any excess candy melt.
- Before the candy melt hardens, place the heart conversation phrase on the front of the cake pop. *(5-6)
- Repeat steps 8-10 with all of your different colored candy melts (yellow, blue, purple, etc.).
- Enjoy your Conversation Heart Cake Pops!
Notes
- If I remember correctly I couldn’t find purple candy melts when I went to make these, so I used white candy meltsΒ and colored them with this food coloring.
- Coconut oil makes the melted candy melts smoother and easier to work with. I add ~1 teaspoon at a time until I get a smooth consistency.Β
- After I cut out all the hearts I pressed the leftover cake dough together and cut out more hearts. Alternatively, you can use a small cookie scoop to make traditional cake pops out of the leftover cake dough.
- Tip: If your cake dough is sticking to the cookie cutter, run the cookie cutter under warm water and dry it off between each cut for a smoother cut and easier/cleaner release.
- You can do this with your hands or with clean food tweezers.Β
- If it does harden before you get a chance to put the conversation phrase on top, simply add a small dab of candy melt to the back of the letter before placing it on the heart cake pop.
